Usually our cardboard boxes go straight to recycling, but one quick-thinking dad constructed the ultimate playhouse for his kids using boxes he purchased from the Home Depot.
Chicago dad-of-four, Rob Hagerman, recently shared a photo of his cardboard creation to his Facebook page, The Real American Dadass, where he creates humorous parenting memes. But this wasn’t any ordinary box home he constructed—this home was lightly illuminated with string lights, and was complete with windows, curtains, and a planter box filled with flowers.
“The sink is full of dishes, the dishwasher is waiting to be unloaded, laundry needs to be ran, and I have no idea what I’m making for dinner yet… but that stuff will always be there,” Hagerman wrote in the photo’s caption. Despite his long to-do list, he checked off the most important task: building his kids their dream playhouse. Not to mention it only put him out around $10 too, as he relays in a comment on Facebook.
“My daughter had been begging me to make her a box fort for a few weeks,” Hagerman told House Beautiful. The night before laying down the cardboard foundation, he searched Youtube for tutorials on how to build the perfect home. “I came across a Home Depot video that I used as my inspiration and made my own modifications,” he says, referencing the video below.
In terms of materials, his list was short: he purchased four extra-large moving boxes and two rolls of masking tape from the Home Depot. When it came to tools, he used a utility knife that he already owned to do all the cutting. Luckily, thanks to the Home Depot’s perfectly square logo, he knew exactly where to cut in order to create windows.
Then he used some extra fabric he had on hand to fashion curtains for the home, gluing them to the interiors. To brighten up the space, he hung string lights inside — which gave the kids enough light to see where they were going, but without compromising the home’s secret clubhouse feel. Using leftover cardboard that would have otherwise been trashed, he also constructed a planter box on the home’s exterior to hold flowers.
Hagerman definitely one-upped the typical cardboard box home with his design. Not to mention, his clients (aka his kids) seem to love it. Other parents took to the comments to praise his creation. While it may not be as extravagant as Stormi Jenner’s two-story playhouse, it sure is priceless.
