Shopping Guide for Net Curtains

8 best blackout curtains of 2022, according to experts

Even though net curtains have a more traditional look, they can make a space look more elegant and put together. Moreover, they come in various designs, patterns, and colours. If you’re thinking about buying net curtains for your home, but you don’t know where to start, this article is for you.

Why You Should Get Net Curtains for Your Home

Net curtains are partially sheer, enough to let sunlight enter the room without minimizing daytime privacy. Even though they’re more decorative than functional, they can make a room look warm and welcoming. They’re also lightweight and create a flowy effect, as opposed to curtains made with thicker, heavier fabrics.

There are many different types of net curtains, but they have one thing in common. Most net curtains you’ll find today are made from polyester. However, this polyester goes through a knitting process that makes the result slightly thicker than cotton voile curtains. Weaving also makes these curtains more long-lasting.

Their simple, elegant design makes them great for any interior style. Moreover, they can match any colour scheme.

What Size Nets Do I Need for My Window?

You can get ready-to-hang curtains, or you can buy custom-made net curtains. Of course, custom-made curtains are more expensive.

How long (or high) your curtains should be depends on the size of your windows and walls. You don’t want your net curtains to be too short, but they shouldn’t be too long either. The ideal net curtain stretches from the top of the window to the sill, also known as a window drop. You need to measure the height from the curtain rod, if you have one, to where you want the curtain to drop.

To calculate the curtain’s width, measure the width of the window or the rod, then consider how much the curtain will be gathered. For the perfect look, multiply your measurement by 2. If you want the net curtain to appear fuller, you can even multiply the width by 3.

Most net curtains come in ready-made drops. For example, standard nets come in 90cm, 114cm, 137cm, 160cm, 206cm, 275cm, etc. If you want to add net curtains on smaller windows, they also come in smaller sizes, including 30cm, 40cm, 45cm, and 60cm. They’re otherwise known as café nets.

Since they’re so lightweight, net curtains don’t need to be hung on rods like curtains made from thick fabrics. You can also loop them through curtain wires. In this case, you may need to add about 1.5cm to the drop.

Styling Net Curtains

The great thing about net curtains is that they can be styled in a number of ways. They’re perfect for the cottage aesthetic because they can make a space feel cosy. On the other hand, they can also fit a more modern space.

Net curtains are known for their intricate patterns and floral designs. They can be embroidered or lacy. But of course, if you want something simpler, you can find plain net curtains.

Although net curtains can usually be found in light colours, such as white, beige, and light grey, they’re also available in bolder tones. If you’re looking to add net curtains to your child’s bedroom, you can choose a more playful hue, like pink, blue, green, or yellow.

If you want, you can even combine colours. You can find white or cream net curtains with coloured flowers. This is a wonderful choice if you want to add style to the space.

Cleaning Net Curtains

Net curtains are thicker than voile curtains, so more dirt can get trapped in the fabric. You should wash them once every three to six months.

Since net curtains are made from polyester, they can be washed at 30 degrees. You can also handwash them. This is wise if the curtains have embroidery or lacework. All you need to do is put them in warm water, add washing detergent, and let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes.

Make sure not to rub the fabric with anything because it’s too delicate. It might get damaged. When it’s time to rinse the curtains, remember that you shouldn’t wring them, as this will crease them. That way, you would avoid having to iron them.

Still, you should always check the washing instructions on the label.
